Donation policy

Thank you for supporting this work. This page explains what happens to your gift.

1. Our tax status

Humanity Systems is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation. We have applied to the IRS for recognition as a 501(c)(3) public charity, and that application is pending.

Until it is approved, donations are not tax deductible. If the IRS approves our application, its approval usually reaches back to the date we were incorporated, and past donations may then become deductible. We’ll tell every donor when we hear. Please talk to your tax advisor about your own situation.

2. How we process donations

Donations are processed by Donorbox and the payment companies it works with, such as Stripe and PayPal. We never see or store your full card or bank account number. Our privacy policy explains what information we receive.

3. Receipts

You’ll get an emailed receipt for every donation. It shows the amount, the date, and that you received no goods or services in return.

4. Choosing a program

When you choose a program, we use your gift for that program and its direct costs. If a program ends, is fully funded, or can’t use your gift, we’ll put it toward the closest related work that serves our purpose. This happens automatically, and by giving, you agree to it.

Gifts made without a program choice go wherever they’re needed most within our purpose.

5. Monthly gifts

You can change or cancel a monthly gift at any time through the link in your Donorbox receipt, or by emailing us. Cancellation takes effect before your next scheduled charge.

6. Refunds

If you made a mistake, such as the wrong amount or a gift made twice, email us within 30 days and we’ll refund it. After 30 days, or once a gift has been spent, we decide refund requests case by case.

7. Gifts we may decline

We may decline or return a gift if accepting it would conflict with our purpose or our independence. For example, we won’t accept a gift that comes with conditions on what our research or benchmark results say. Companies whose AI products we test may not direct gifts to the AI Behavior Benchmark.

8. Your privacy

We never sell or trade donor information. We don’t publish donor names without permission.
